Railway platform and track connection between Atocha and Chamartín stations
This project involves the construction of the railroad subgrade and standard gauge track connection between Atocha and Chamartín stations. To this end, a tunnel with an excavation diameter of 11.495 m and a length of 7,300 m has been built. The tunnel runs south-north from Atocha station through Alfonso XII Street, Serrano Street, and the El Viso residential area to Chamartín.
The landscape is mainly urban, going under a monument of great architectural value, the Puerta de Alcalá, at a depth of 31 m.
Solution adopted: Double-track tunnel with an internal diameter of 10.40 m and emergency exits every 775 m, which are also used for ventilation and pumping in the tunnel.
