The work involves demolishing the existing staircase and building a new one, which is done in two different bays: the new staircase 1 starts at level +6.80, leading up to the mezzanine floor (level 0), the main first floor, and the second and third attic floors.
The staircase is built with marble treads and stainless steel risers, laminated glass railings with stainless steel handrails, and stainless steel cladding on the underside and sides. Likewise, another staircase called staircase 2 begins at this same level (+6.80), in the bay opposite the previous one and symmetrically located with respect to the elevator bank, and descending independently to the basement and sub-basement (-2) levels. This one is built with gray granite treads, black steel sheet risers, folded steel plate railings, and stainless steel handrails.
In addition, two new large glass-fronted elevators will be installed, running through the space and allowing views of the interior façade and the restored oculi (round windows) from all floors.
All these works ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and the new Technical Building Code, which stipulate that occupants must be able to evacuate the building safely, that the spread of fire within the building and to adjacent ones is restricted, and that firefighting and rescue teams can operate effectively.
