Barcelona Metro L8 works

The project will connect Line 8 Llobregat - Anoia on the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya railway with the Barcelona - Vallès line from Espanya Square to Gràcia Boulevard.
The works included in this contract involve the execution of the first part of the extension of Line 8 between the Espanya Square exit and Llançà Street under Gran Via, where the tunnel boring machine working shaft is located beneath an extensive network of existing infrastructure.
The work in this project includes:
Espanya Square station: Structures to accommodate the extension and remodeling of the current station and the replacement of the hydraulic infrastructures. The structures included are as follows:
• Construction of a new FGC entrance
• Enlargement of the current entrance hall and the trap output shaft
• Trap input shaft and renovation of the current entrance hall roof structure
Espanya Square area: Structures for the continuation of the works under Gran Via for the tunnels for tracks 1 and 2 of the L8 extension and the replacement and connection structures for L3, as well as the replacement of the road tunnel affected by the project. The structures included are the following:
• L3 tunnel access shaft
• Track 1 access
• Track 2 access
• L1-L3 connection corridor shaft
Mine tunnel: The extension of FGC Line 8 Llobregat – Anoia between Espanya Square and the tunnel boring machine working shaft will be carried out in a mine and between screens (tracks 1 and 2). This is because the existing infrastructures for the vehicle underpass beneath España Square, the access corridors to Line 1 that connect Lines 1 and 3 and the junction with Line 3 prevent the use of a tunnel boring machine.
In addition to the bulk of the project, the affected services will be restored and various temporary traffic arrangements and alternative diversions will be put in place for the duration of the works, both of which will have a significant impact on the start date of the works.
