Conservation of the stone features on the façade of the Spanish National Library
-
Madrid
Work on the façade was restricted to those areas and features that showed significant deterioration, with the potential for large pieces to fall off and/or problems with water ingress or retention.
Four types of work were carried out to resolve these problems: sealing cracks/fissures, stitching cracks/fissures, consolidating elements, and injecting liquid lime mortar (PLM) or natural hydraulic lime mortar (NHL).
All this work was carried out under the supervision of the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute.
In addition, the staircase was dry cleaned with glass microbeads and the light fittings were restored and repaired.
